Giro 09 - week 2 round up

Here we are at the second rest day, and after yesterdays stage no doubt much needed. When you read (on Twitter, where else!) that the Pros think it was one of the hardest days ever, with the epic Plateau de Beille being mentioned in the same breath.

As I mentioned before in the week one round up, the course to some degree has influenced the race more than any one rider or Team. This has provided bundles of entertainment and a tough race.

Stands outs have to be Stage 12 and 16. Both were epic hard days in the saddle which changed the way riders were percieved and how the race would unfold. Stage 12 added a new dimension to the individual TT, which frankly can be as dull as dishwater. Denis Menchov took the win with a time of 1 hr 34’ 29” and progressed into the pink jersey. Not many would thought that was possible and he may well hold onto it till Rome. His biggest rival Carlos Sastre (the winner of stage 16) and not Di Luca will be the only person who will take the pink jersey away from him. Why do I think that. I think Di Luca is on the rivet each day, don't get me wrong he has ridden a great race and the passion and respect he has shown is an example to all.

Again the Columbia High Road team had a great week. The only negative is that their man for the overall isn't likely to get on the podium unless something amazing happens on Wednesday. With 5 days racing left it should present lots of ups and downs and will continue to hold my attention until the end.
