After bailing out last week, we (not the Royal we but a small group) had committed to the Sunday ride. Our plans changed a little as originally we were planning to do the 20+ Km across the city and head South and out to the hills that lie there. So we headed to familiar ground and went North.

Using my trusty Winter bike and clad in Goretex and overshoes off we went. Riding in the cold and rain certainly adds to the toughness and reserve which you may need to call on, even in the supposedly dry months of Spring and Summer (anyone who has ever done the Tour of Wessex will know what I mean). By no means was I quick or feeling strong today, but upon reaching home I had a sense of smugness that takes a few hours to wear off.

Other riders on the roads were few and (very) far between. In some ways it felt like we had the roads to ourselves as the usual Sunday traffic was dramatically less. Today also presented a quandary as we had an uninvited guest with us. Seeing what clothes he had on instantly made me worry, as a tiny pair of shorts and trainers didn't bode well for the forecast I had seen. There was one part of me that wanted to say, go home and come dressed properly next time, and I am sure many leaders on Club Runs would have said this. We, and maybe foolishly, said tag on.
Today made me realise that I am not as patient as I thought I was, having to wait in the freezing conditions for him to catch up left me frustrated at times. Fair play to the new rider as his resolve was strong, and he knew when to throw the towel in and catch the train home. Was I ever that green around the gills, probably but time hides away unpleasant experiences so I can't be 100% sure.

Leaving the new rider we continued home, the weather worsening by the minute. I new this morning I'd have a puncture (hence why I brought two tubes) and it couldn't have come at a worse time, like there is ever a god time for one. Thankfully a handy drive way appeared just at the right time, sheltering us from the traffic. Digging in we continued home, the vision of a hot shower and warm food awaiting added extra zip to tied and cold legs.
All in all it was a funny old day that taught me many lessons on many levels. Thank you to my riding buddies today Rob, Wei and Mr New Rider.
