It has been a funny old week here in the UK. I read with little surprise of the various positive tested athletes over the last ten days. The biggest sadness it brings is that it throws into doubt all performances. Is the time coming when DNA testing will be the only way to instil confidence into the fans.
With two German TV stations deciding that they will no longer broadcast, and coupled with the announcement that there will be no Tour of Germany, it really is a very sad week indeed. From a racing point of view it will leave a hole in the calendar and from a viewing perspective the loss of the Tour will surely be missed.
I have no answers. I am of course part sceptic part idealist. I hope for a clean sport but I know in real terms that it may not come in my life time.
On a lighter note I have just finished working at the London Cycle Show. This was a great show with all the major manufacturers being present, many for the first time. Bicycle interest is growing and the appetite for good quality products seems to be on the increase.
Road, MTB and all other branches of the sport seem to be experiencing an all time high on the interest front. I am sure that the various government schemes are helping people to fall back in love with cycling.
Cycling is a great leveller, a point where all can meet and leave their day to day life for a few hours. This may be the main reason why I am always an idealist at heart as I realise that no matter who hard you try people will cheat, there are many that couldn't care less about the sport but just love to ride their bikes.
